Distance Learning Transition Announcement
9/22/08
Beginning with the Fall 2008 semester, Rensselaer has begun a three year transition to phase out the delivery of degree and certificate programs via distance learning. Please be assured that all distance students will be able to complete their programs as originally planned, and we will work with each student individually to develop their plan of study or account for any changes to their plan of study resulting from this change.
As Rensselaer continues its transformation to a top-tier research university with global reach and global impact, it is critical that our faculty remain focused on building the Institute’s academic stature. This change to Distance Learning will allow faculty members to focus attention on research and education for both undergraduate and graduate students on campus.
This decision does not reflect a change in Rensselaer’s commitment to the core enterprise of Education for Working Professionals as articulated in The Rensselaer Plan. Many of the programs and services that are currently provided through Distance Learning will be made available through on-campus learning opportunities on both the Troy and Hartford campuses, as well as onsite programs at corporate locations.
It is our full intention to ensure that the quality of the academic programs and commitment of faculty resources will not be compromised during this transition. Services for both faculty and students will also continue to be maintained as necessary to ensure quality in the delivery and support systems required for students to participate in courses via distance learning.
We will continue to maintain strong connections with our corporate partners, allowing our faculty and other members of the Rensselaer community to continue building mutually beneficial relationships with the companies that currently have employees enrolled in Rensselaer programs via Distance Learning.
