Washington, D.C., March 5, 1998: The Million Youth March is gaining great momentum around the country and the world. Black youth are now mobilizing as never before to uplift themselves as "generation next" to improve the condition of our people. The entire Black family will attend the Million Youth March, with our young people galvanizing to take ‘the point’ in this new era of Black Power reemerging as we move into the year 2000.
The National Convener - Minister Khallid Abdul Muhammad, has been very successful in attracting a broad range of support for the march and movement. Minister Muhammad and the National Youth Director - Atty. Malik Zulu Shabazz, and other national staff members have been crisscrossing the country working overtime to move the march forward. The Convener of the Million Man March, Minister Louis Farrakhan, at the 2/22/98 Saviors Day Convention, publicly stated his support for Minister Khallid Muhammad. He stated that “He prays Allah (God) will bless Brother Khallid is his great desire to lead our people.” Minister Farrakhan has also been invited as an honored participant at the Million Youth March. Young, dynamic Farrakhan Khallid Muhammad has been appointed National Teen Director and has been doing a great job taking the message to the junior and high school students.
The youngest daughter of the legendary freedom fighter Malcolm X and Dr. Betty Shabazz; Sister Malikah Shabazz, has joined the National Organizing Staff and has been appointed Assistant to the National Director.
The Founder and Convener of the Million Woman March, Sister Philé Chionesu, and other march organizers have endorsed the Million Youth March and have joined the national staff.
“Trucing” gang leaders as well as gang and ex-gang members from Chicago and Los Angeles, including Crips, Bloods, Vice-Lord, Gangster Disciples, El-Rookens and others are involved and will represent.
The New York M.Y.M. Black Power Organizing Committee, Chaired by young Sister Erica Ford of the December 12th Movement and The Code, is making great progress in the Host City, launching a highly publicized and effective Million Youth March kickoff on the Malcolm X Assassination Observance (Feb 21st).
Reverend Al Sharpton, the legendary activist-former N.Y. Senatorial and Mayoral Candidate is now the Million Youth March National Black Christian Movement Director. Rev. Sharpton has been very vocal nationwide in support of the march and his organization (National Action Network) has several rallies planned to show their support.
The Million Youth March is making great headway in Atlanta, Georgia under the young Southern Regional Representative, Hashim Nzinga and the Atlanta Co-Chair, young Byron Amos. Also citywide Council- woman Able Mable Thomas has endorsed the march, and is serving as an advisor. Rap groups Outkast, Goodie Mob and top radio personality, V-103’s D.J. Greg Street are among Atlanta supporters. Several events, including a big pre Million Youth March rally have been planned around the annual “Freaknick” festival to boost local support for the march. Local march organizers are expecting many to make the trip North to Harlem, NY in September.
The Million Youth March is building steam in New Jersey and the Tri-State Area. The M.Y.M. New Jersey Black Power Organizing Committee, headed by Tashi Public Relations, has been doing a great job, hosting events that have garnered statewide media attention. East Regional College Campus Coordinators, Hassani Imorabe and Kalfani Brown of ANI Productions have been solidifying college campus support around the nation.
Major entertainers and athletes are Friends of the Million Youth March! Comedian Steve Harvey, Host of Showtime at the Apollo and Mega Star of the Steve Harvey T.V. sitcom is firmly on board. He along with famous N.Y. D.J. / Mixmaster Kid-Capri, top Atlanta radio personality D.J. Greg Street, K.R.S. One and Doug E. Fresh will be Master(s) of Ceremonies for the days program.
Friends of the M.Y.M. also include Puff Daddy, Queen Latifah, Tony Draper, Eightball, Mary J. Blige, Dr. Dre, Wu-Tang, Rakim, Kirk Franklin, Latrell Spreewell, Shaquille O'neal, Westside Connection, WC, Mack 10, Chuck D of P.E., Tyra Banks, Tim Hardaway, Vaughn Dunbar (Former N.F.L. Rookie of The Year & Head of the N.F.L. Division of M.Y.M.), Boxer - Roy Jones, Jr., Charles Oakley, Brian Cox, Gary Payton, Jay-Z, Spinderella, Comedian - Mark Curry, Ice T, Clyde Drexler, Heisman Trophy Winner - Eddie George, Marty Carter (Bears), Antonio Freeman, Charles Smith (Knicks), Keith Sweat, Comedian / Actor - Joe Torre, Onyx, World Record Holder & Olympic Gold Medalist - Michael Johnson, Levon Kirkland (Steelers), Blacksheep, and others.
As part of the scheduled Million Youth March Special Events, many of the above artists and others will participate in the Million Youth March “Black Unity Hip Hop Conference”, The Million Youth March “Black Power Hip-Hop/R&B /Reggae Concert”, and The Million Youth March “Give God the Glory Gospel Concert”. Gospel superstar Kirk Franklin, of Gods Property, is expected as concert headliner.
Million Youth March - ‘Black Power Organizing Committees’ are rapidly forming across the nation as well as in Europe, Africa and other nations worldwide. A growing number of colleges, universities, churches and youth groups are also on board. The M.Y.M. Pan Afrikan Division recently opened its doors in Paris, France under the freedom fighter ‘Bida Koyagbele’, of the Federation of Pan Afrikan Organizations. Native American, Hispanic (La Raza), Arab & Asian youth will strongly represent.
Full and complete reparations for the atrocities of slavery and the Black Holocaust are also a key plank issues of the Million Youth March Platform. An M.Y.M. Reparations Demand is being circulated throughout the nation will be presented at the conclusion of the march to U.N. Secretary General Kofi Annan and the United States Government demanding full and complete reparations for the defendants of slaves.
The Million Youth March is actively seeking to form successful education, business, college, philanthropic and mentoring partnerships to build a bridge between Information Technology and our young computer illiterate masses. A M.Y.M. Tech Knowledge Fund has been established to provide low-cost computers and cut-rate Internet access to financially deprived young people. The post Million Youth March agenda is to launch Fall '98 'M.Y.M. DA Street & Virtual University' in ten major urban communities and on the Internet. Henceforth, www.millionyouthmarch.com will provide a virtual educational, political, career development, business opportunity and networking universe online. "A Black Technology Revolution Will Take Place On the World Wide Web!"
The Western Regional M.Y.M. Black Power Organizing Committee recently opened the National Million Youth March Resource Center in Las Vegas, Nevada committed to excellence in research as a catalyst for action on issues affecting young people; action geared toward improving the situation and prospects of our young people.
The M.Y.M. Press Club staff are scheduling press conferences and mass rallies in the North, South, East, and West. Major cities like L.A., Oakland, San Francisco, Portland, Seattle, Las Vegas, Phoenix, Denver, Baton Rouge, New Orleans, Dallas, Houston, Chicago, Miami, Cleveland, Boston, Philadelphia, Newark, are being target to reach the millions of youth, their parents and elders. During the month of August, on The Hon. Marcus Garvey birthday, A Million Youth March - Red Black Green Mass Rally will take place on Sweet Auburn Avenue in Atlanta, Georgia.
