Untangling the Web
The new Tetherless World constellation will guide research on technologies to support a Web-accessible world

By changing the way data is encoded into Web pages and transmitted among them, we may soon develop highly reliable, efficient new ways of locating useful information. These tools would not replace the Internet search engines we use so often, but would add a new dimension to our ability to find things online. In fact, that’s the goal of the Rensselaer Tetherless World Research Constellation. The constellation, which formally launches this year, aims to revamp the entire Web’s ability to handle information in ways that would benefit everyone from casual browsers to leading-edge academic researchers.  Read more

$1 Million Scholarship Supports Future Engineers

Rensselaer has received a gift of $1 million to establish the Paula and Jeffrey R. Gural ’64 Scholarship for undergraduate students in civil engineering. Through the scholarship, Jeffrey Gural said he intends to help ease the financial struggle many students face to meet college costs.

Modeling, design, and controls expert B. Wayne Bequette, professor of chemical and biological engineering, was recently elected a fellow of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE). The AIChE will honor Bequette at the group’s annual conference this November in Philadelphia.

Top Economist Becomes Head of Economics at Rensselaer

An internationally renowned economist with a 25-year history at one the country’s leading Federal Reserve Banks will join Rensselaer as the new head of the department of economics. Arturo Estrella is currently senior vice president for the research and statistics group at the Federal Reserve Bank of New York.
