Science has always been my favorite subject in school but when I started looking at colleges, I visited mostly liberal arts schools. Then, I was selected to receive the Rensselaer Medal Award. As I started to learn more about RPI, I realized that it was a school where my love for science would have the chance to develop into a real future for me. That possibility was soon realized when I was accepted into the B.S./Ph.D. program after my first year. I really liked how the program gave me the opportunity to do lab “rotations” to explore my different interests and find a place that suited my needs and interests. Although I know the program is going to be very challenging at times, it is such a great opportunity and I am very grateful to be a part of it.
I am a dual Biology/Chemistry major and am working in the lab of Professor George Plopper. Currently, I am working on growing stem cells, healthy bone cells and cancerous bone cells in a 3D environment, imaging them and working in conjunction with Professor Yenner’s Computer Science lab to graph the cell images. The 3D computer images have the potential to be very helpful in the medical field by accurately diagnosing tissue samples.
Besides working in the lab, I am also very involved in campus activities. I am a Resident Assistant and Resident Director for Residence Life; and a member of several teams and clubs including the Women’s Volleyball Team, Photography Club, and Relay for Life Committee.
