Is RPI Guardian the same as the RPIAlert system?

No, RPI Guardian is separate from the RPIAlert Emergency Notification System. While all faculty, staff and students are required to provide the RPIAlert System with a primary cell phone number where they can be reached during an emergency, RPI Guardian is optional, and requires users to sign up for the service on their own.

How much will this service cost me?

Registration for this service is free to all active faculty, staff and students.

Who did Public Safety purchase RPI Guardian from?

RPI Guardian is a service of Rave Mobile Safety. Rave is a private company based out of Massachusetts that has been a leading provider of software safety solutions for a number of years.

Is the information secure?

Yes. Rave uses the latest in security technologies and processes to ensure all information is kept secure and private. They undergo regular security audits to ensure the security of data.

My account says “profile incomplete,” what else do I need to do? What information is required?

In order for your account to be activated you have to complete three tasks. First, register your cell phone. Secondly, create your 4 digit PIN. Lastly, make sure you accept the terms and agreements. This will complete your registration. All other information is optional.

Is RPI Guardian easy to use?

Yes, all you need to do is download Rave Guardian, register and fill out your profile.

SMS/Text messages are used to register your phone. What if I have SMS/Text messaging blocked?

During the registration process, you’ll be asked to enter your cell phone number, at which time a SMS/text message will be sent to your phone with a confirmation code. To receive this message and complete the registration process you will need to contact your cell phone service provider and have SMS/text messaging unblocked.

Does RPI Guardian require users to have a certain kind of phone?

The basic profile features of RPI Guardian work on any mobile phone running on any US-based mobile carrier network which allows downloading of applications to it. RPI Guardian can locate most devices on the AT&T, Nextel, Sprint and Verizon networks.

If I switch my cell phone number and provider will I need to register my information again?

If you change your cell phone number, you should log into your RPI Guardian account and update your profile with your new mobile number. You will not be asked to create a new profile; however, this is the perfect time to review your existing profile, and confirm the remainder of the information is up to date.

If I am inactive from RPI for personal reasons or leave school for a semester or any length of time will my personal profile information still be available and will I be able to use RPI Guardian?

No, in the event that you leave RPI for any reason, your personal profile and account information will be removed from the system. Upon your return, you will need to register your personal profile and cell phone information in the RPI Guardian account.

If I am a faculty or staff member and my family members also have RPI RIN numbers, can they register for RPI Guardian?

No, at this time the system is in place for faculty, staff and students. However, please remember that ANYONE can always call RPI Public Safety at 518-276-6656 for assistance.

Is RPI Guardian always tracking me?

No, your privacy is of utmost importance. You can only be located if an alarm timer expires or when calling for immediate assistance to 518-328-0463 on your registered cellular phone.

Can Public Safety track me whenever they want?

No, Public Safety will only be able to obtain your information if an alarm timer expires or when calling for immediate assistance to 518-328-0463 on your registered cellular phone.

Will RPI Guardian let other people like my family or friends track me?

No, never. Only Public Safety will ever have access to your information and only when you allow it.

How can I tell if my mobile phone can provide its location to RPI Guardian?

RPI Guardian can locate most devices on the AT&T, Nextel, Sprint and Verizon networks. Once you have registered for RPI Guardian, you will be presented with information about location services on your mobile carrier.

What if my carrier or mobile phone cannot provide RPI Guardian with location information? Can I still use RPI Guardian?

RPI Guardian works with any mobile phone, on practically any carrier. If RPI Guardian cannot determine your phone's location, all other profile information will be made available to Public Safety when you use RPI Guardian.

Are their certain factors that can affect the carrier reported location accuracy?

Yes factors include, but are not limited to: whether or not you are calling from inside a building or a "dead spot"; the strength of your cell signal, such as proximity of cell towers or satellites; whether or not your phone is GPS enabled and, the type and quality of your phone, carrier and signal.

How does my profile information get collected and sent to Public Safety?

You will opt-in to this service and provide as much as possible as part of the registration process. You are in control of the information presented by this service. To simplify enrollment, your RCS account, RIN numbers, names and affiliation have been preloaded.

Once I register for RPI Guardian, will my cell phone be exposed to spam messages and advertisements which I do not want?

No, your cell phone will receive only one text message that provides you with a confirmation number indicating that your cell phone has been registered. No other advertisements or spam will be sent to your cell phone.

What can I do if someone forces me to turn off RPI Guardian?

You would press the emergency button to be immediately connected to Public Safety.
