Remember: You can always call for a safety escort.
RPI Safety Escort

You don’t have to walk on campus alone after dark.

Request a safety escort from Public Safety by calling:

Ext. 6656

Personal Safety Escorts:

If you are concerned for your safety and do not want to walk alone, contact Public Safety and request a safety escort.

Our officers can provide transportation or walk you safely to your campus destination. A point-to-point safety escort is available within a 5-minute radius to campus.

To request this service contact our dispatch office at (518) 276-6656.

What the Safety Escort Service is Not:

The Safety Escort is not a taxi service. It is for Rensselaer community members who are walking alone or have safety concerns about getting to their destination.

There are times when RPI community members are simply in need of a ride, and call Public Safety instead of using the campus or public transportation that is available to them: the Red Hawk Shuttle or the Capital District Transportation Authority (CDTA) bus system. We urge all community members to use the Safety Escort Service as it is intended.

CDTA provides transportation day and night from the center of campus to Rensselaer residences and areas in the city. Please get a copy of the CDTA bus routes and times of operation at the Visitor Information Center and familiarize yourself with the service.

Shuttle to Residential Areas

The Capital District Transportation Authority (CDTA) is the region's public transit provider:

  • Four CDTA bus routes serve the campus and link it with locations in Troy, Watervliet and Latham.
  • Service operates 7 days a week, including Holidays and semester breaks.
  • Rensselaer students can board any of the 4 bus routes free of charge. You will be required to show a valid ID card.

Remote Facilities

In addition to comprehensive campus coverage, CDTA will link you to remote facilities and the surrounding community, including services to:

  • Tibbits Avenue (fraternities, LINAC)
  • Pawling Avenue (fraternities)
  • Watervliet (25th Street Facility)
  • Latham Circle and Latham Farms Mall
  • Downtown Troy
  • Hoosick Street Shopping Center
  • Albany Airport
  • Rensselaer Train Station
  • Crossgates, Colonie Center Malls
  • University at Albany
  • Schenectady & Bus Stations
