The Main Boiler Furnace is fueled by gas. These pipes receive the gas from Niagara Mohawk. If a gas shortage occurs, Niagara Mohawk requires that Rensselaer switch over to oil for their fuel. Rensselaer spends approximately $1 million a year on fuel (gas and oil.)

Boiler #3 is used in the summer for hot water and to provide steam for the Absorption Chiller for Cogswell, VCC, MRC, Polymer, and the Library.
