Undergraduate Programs
We are proud of our reputation as a world leader in physics education. Our undergraduate program mixes first-class research with first-class teaching, giving students the professional skills needed by today’s practicing physicists.
As a student, you will be challenged to study science for its most fundamental applications. Here, with our uniquely practical approach and innovative interactive learning methods, we encourage you to delve deeper into understanding how science relates to the world, and what purpose it serves. Prepare for your career or for an advanced degree. Learn the languages and concepts that today’s complex technological society demands.
Undergraduates have always been an important element in our research program. Students co-write publications and present research presentations at conferences. Research programs are funded by a wide variety of government and industrial grants.
Rensselaer’s physics faculty members are researchers in astrophysics, biophysics, condensed matter physics, optics, nuclear and particle physics, and physics education. The department also hosts 10 to 20 visitors and other short term faculty at any one time. Many collaborate with faculty members in other departments or with scientists at industrial or government research laboratories.
We are committed to excellence in teaching and research. Our innovative teaching has been nationally recognized with the Boeing Outstanding Educator Award, and our work was instrumental in bringing the Hesburgh Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Education to Rensselaer.
