Us
The Society of Physics Students is a national
organization, with a chapter here at RPI. We are:

A source for information on research, scholarships,
and other physics societies

An opportunity for outreach into the local community

"friends of physics" in all walks of life

A source of information on the multiple career options

An awesome organization with great members
and exciting activities (not to mention parties!)
Our activities in the past included:

Teaching high-school students at Troy High
-
Showing boy scouts about the wonders of liquid nitrogen,
angular momentum, and lasers
-
Exploring the effects of liquid nitrogen on fruit and flowering
plants
-
Helping out at science fairs here at RPI
-
Weekend trips to visit research facilities

Vast amounts of pizza, soda, and cheese-based food products
-
A whipped-cream pie throw to raise money
-
"Rent-a-student" day to raise money (a.k.a. Student Slavery Day)

Who
can join the SPS?
Anyone interested in physics can join SPS. You don't have to be
a physics major, and you don't even have to be a student! New members can join
any time during the school year, and the membership is valid for the rest of
the school year. See the Upcoming
Events page for our next meeting.
Local Membership in the RPI chapter of SPS is $5 for a year and includes:

Eligibility to be an officer of the local chapter

Participation in all local activities

Opportunities for trips to labs and other sites of interest

Sponsorship by local chapter for meetings and trips
Membership in the National SPS is $15
for a year and includes:

Eligibility for scholarships, travel grants, and other awards

Journal of Undergraduate Research in Physics (JURP)

SPS Newsletter

Career Placement Service

Free Membership with one AIP Member Society for
(Undergraduates Only), for up to three years.

Membership can be initiated at any time and is valid for the 12 months
following application. Membership forms are available outside the club
advisor's office, or on-line at the national web site.
