IGERT Program FAQ

Are fellowships taxable or not?

Fellowships are not taxable through the school but are taxable come tax time for certain things.

Though not an exact break down, you can figure about 75 percent is taxable income and 25 percent is not.

Depending on the circumstances and how you file, you may owe $1,000.00 - $3,000.00 at the end of the year and (again, this is not exact).

Suggestion:

There are two instances when you receive three payments per month; you should put those extra payments aside and this will most likely cover a bulk of the taxes owed at the end of the year.

Since this is a fellowship, you will not receive a W-2, 1099 form from RPI at the end of the year. You can file your taxes immediately on January 1.

Please see the IRS site for more information: http://www.irs.gov/taxtopics/tc421.html

How long the fellowship is good for?

The fellowship is renewable contingent upon satisfactory progress. It can be renewed for up to two years.

What does one have to do for renewal?

Renewal is initiated by the faculty, and then the program director reviews the student progress.

Are school fees covered or paid by the student from the stipend given?

On the fellowship the tuition is covered and stipend. The school fees, books, health insurance etc. are not paid by the fellowship. Students will have to pay these fees out of the stipend they are given.

What are requirements of IGERT?

  • The overall GPA should be a 3.3.
  • Report given to the Program Director when requested.
  • Involvement in the summer retreats.

How does the award compare with the TA/RA average stipend?

The stipend given by the fellowship is much higher than a TA/RA position.

A fellowship recipient should keep this in mind for when the fellowship ends. The monies they will have will not be that amount, so keep it in mind when planning the budget for the year. A suggestion might be to make sure you can pay your bills off of what a TA/RA makes so that it isn’t such a drastic change when the fellowship ends.

Do I have to find additional summer support?

The fellowship provides summer support.

Do you need to be a U.S . citizen for the fellowship?

To apply for this fellowship one needs to be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident of the U.S.
