IGERT Program Application Information
The Integrative Graduate Education and Research Traineeship (IGERT) program seeks to train Ph.D. scientists and engineers with the interdisciplinary background and the technical, professional and personal skills needed to address the global questions of the future. Through the use of innovative curricula and internships, and by focusing on problem-centered training, these programs give their graduates the edge needed to become leaders in their chosen fields.
Candidate Profile
To be successful, the students nominated must have the following characteristics:
- A United States Citizen or US Permanent Resident.
- Possess excellent GPA and GRE scores.
- Qualified for admissions to the Ph.D. program at Rensselaer.
- Able to provide faculty nominations supporting the nomination.
How to Apply
Faculty Nomination Process:
Faculty members may select up to three candidates for consideration. Complete and return the IGERT Fellowship Nomination Form by email to physics-IGERT@rpi.edu.
Student Application Process:
Secure faculty recommendations that demonstrate your potential for success at Rensselaer and qualification for the IGERT Fellowship.
Submit your application materials to Graduate Admissions
In your “Statement of Background and Goals”, please make it clear that you are interested in being an IGERT Trainee.

Timeline
Fellowship application deadline:
- Fall entrance: January 1
- Spring entrance: August 15
Fellowship award notification:
- Fall entrance: March 1
- Spring entrance: September 15
Student enrollment decision deadline:
