Campus Parking Meters
Campus parking meters are available in several locations. Meter rates apply as posted on each meter. Campus Meter Locations
Meters take U.S. quarters only, or eCash meter cards.
In addition to the campus parking meters, the city of Troy provides some metered parking spaces on streets surrounding the main campus.
eCash Meter Cards
An eCash meter card is an electronic replacement for quarters.
Because it’s electronic, eCash can be stored in a computer chip, unlike your credit card or phone card, turning it into a “smart card”. With the chip, the “smart-card” has the ability to store your money electronically, freeing you from the hassle of carrying pockets full of change for parking meters. Rensselaer now offers eCash “smart-cards” for use in the parking meters on campus.
An eCash meter card works like a debit card for meters. You initially purchase the card at the Public Safety & Parking Access Offices for $5 and add as much money as you like. The Public Safety & Parking Access Offices has a point-of-sale system designed to accept cash and convert it to eCash on your debit card. Simply place your eCash meter card in the card reader and insert the amount of money you want to add.
Every time you use a meter, just insert the eCash meter card into the slot located on the front of the meter and hold it there until the appropriate time comes up on the meter face. It is that simple!
Since you won’t need quarters, using the eCash meter card will help you avoid tickets. When your eCash meter card runs out of money, simply put it in the point of sale system at the Public Safety & Parking Access Offices building, insert your money and the funds on your eCash meter card will be replenished. Since the eCash card does not expire, it is convenient whether you use a meter on a daily basis, or only a few times a year.
The eCash meter card is easy to use. It will even credit your card if you return to your car before time is expired. Simply place the eCash card in the parking meter again to reclaim your money.
Since the card works like cash, it’s balance is non-refundable in the event of loss or theft.
