EMPAC Presents the Light Surgeons
Rensselaer’s Experimental Media and Performing Arts Center (EMPAC) kicked off its fall season of events Sept. 14 with the UK-based Light Surgeons, who presented an eye-popping performance that fused documentary film-making, live and electronic music, animationa nd motion graphics with innovative digital video performance tools.
Recorded and shot in and around Troy, True Fictions: New Adventures in Folklore was the first public presentation of an EMPAC commission. It received support from the $1 million Jaffe Fund for Experimental Media and Performing Arts. The fund, a gift from Amy and David Jaffe ’64, supports five years of commissions, performances, and productions of contemporary works. More than 400 people attended the event, held in the Alumni Sports and Recreation Center.
As its extraordinary building takes shape, EMPAC's program is steadily growing. EMPAC is already inviting artists to reside on campus, commissioning exciting new orks, and launching a series of long-distance collaborations with other institutions. The fall season had a full slate of events offering dance, music, lectures, and theatrical pieces presented by national and international performers.
