A unique group of friends who met on campus in the late ’40s gathered in September at Danford’s Inn in Port Jefferson, N.Y. They are unique in that all of the women are Rensselaer graduates, as well as two of the men. “Having met at Rensselaer in the late 1940s, married, graduated, raised families, and had rewarding careers, while keeping in close touch, we have attended many reunions together,” says George Cohen.
However, he adds, “We would like to tell the Rensselaer world about something other than the great education we received.” For about 20 years, since retirement, this group has planned a get-together every nine months. These mini-reunions have been held in Boston, Philadelphia, Baltimore, and at various resorts and Elderhostels.
Their degrees were diverse, but their friendships, bonding. The women numbered 40 in a class of 1,500.
“The women were all very close because there were so few of us,” says Irma Shaler Cohen. “We had our own lounge in the student union. We didn’t need a sorority, because it was just us.”
Good health willing, they will meet again at Reunion 2005 on campus, in June.
