Fengyan Li Receives NSF CAREER Award (September 2009)
engyan Li, assistant professor of mathematical sciences at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, has won a Faculty Early Career Development Award (CAREER) from the National Science Foundation.

2008 Undergraduate Research Forum and Awards (May 2008)
The 2008 Undergraduate Research Forum & Awards was held on March 21, naming three winners each in the applied and theoretical categories.

Rensselaer Professor Fengyan Li Awarded Sloan Research Fellowship (March 2008)
Fengyan Li, assistant professor of mathematical sciences at Rensselaer, has been named a 2008 Alfred P. Sloan Research Fellow.

Department of Mathematical Sciences Invites Applications for Tenure-Track Positions (November 2006)
Applications are invited for one or more tenure-track positions in applied mathematics, to begin in August 2007. Applicants are expected to possess an outstanding record in research and a strong interest and ability in teaching. We invite candidates with a commitment to applied mathematics and interdisciplinary research. We are especially interested in candidates whose work involves mathematically based ideas for extracting information from data (data-mining, imaging, optimization, bioinformatics, geoinformatics, etc.), inverse problems and scientific computation.

The Office of Research has announced the Mathematical Sciences research awards for April, May, and June 2006.

Rensselaer Math Professor Wins Gold Medal in Diving Competition (September 2006)
Rensselaer math professor Margaret Cheney recently won the gold medal in the 3-meter competition held for the 50-54 age group during the FINA Masters World Diving Championship held in Stanford, Calif., last month.

The Department of Mathematical Sciences conferred a series of awards and honors at their annual Commencement Luncheon on May 19, 2006.

Two Rensselaer Students Selected as 2006 Barry M. Goldwater Scholars (April 2006)
Two Rensselaer students, Elizabeth DeLouise and Jeffrey Martin, have been selected as 2006 Barry M. Goldwater Scholars by the Goldwater Scholarship and Excellence in Education Foundation. The national award honors students pursuing careers in the fields of mathematics, the natural sciences, and engineering.

"Outstanding Winners" in Mathematical Modeling Contest (April 2006)
Nine Rensselaer undergraduate students recently attended the Mathematical Contest in Modeling (MCM), which challenges teams of students to clarify, analyze, and propose solutions to open-ended problems. Math students Matthew Pelliccione, Michael Sasseville and Igor Zhitnitsky were awarded one of the 11 "Outstanding Winner" prizes out of 748 competing teams.

Rensselaer Graduate Programs Ranked Among the Nation’s Best by U.S. News & World Report (April 2006)
Rensselaer’s engineering, fine arts, applied mathematics, and management graduate programs were ranked among the best in the nation in the 2007 U.S. News & World Report guide to “America’s Best Graduate Schools,” published online March 31, 2006.

Professor Peter Kramer Receives NSF Career Award (August 2005)
Peter Kramer, assistant professor of mathematical sciences at Rensselaer, has been awarded a Faculty Early Career Development Award (CAREER) from the National Science Foundation (NSF). Kramer will use the projected five-year, $412,138 grant to work on developing a new quantitative model to represent the interaction of water molecules and protein molecules with the aim of accelerating computational simulations, potentially leading to future medical applications.

Student Selected as Academic All-American (July 2005)
Rensselaer student-athlete Sharath Alampur have been selected as ESPN The Magazine National Academic All-Americans in the college division of men's track & field/cross country, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America.

McLaughlin receives 2005 Darrin Counseling Award (May 2005)
Professor Harry McLaughlin, Professor of Mathematical Sciences, has been selected as this year's recipient of the David M. Darrin Counseling Award. This award was established by David M. Darrin '40, to recognize a faculty member who has made an unusual contribution in the counseling of undergraduate students, generously sharing time and talents with them, and demonstrating special concern for their welfare in and out of the classroom.

Rensselaer Undergraduate Team Selected To Receive 2005 SIAM Award for Mathematical Modeling Contest (April 2005)
A Rensselaer undergraduate team has been selected to receive the 2005 Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM) Award in the Mathematical Contest in Modeling, besting competitors from Harvard University, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and others.

Searching for Cures by the Numbers (April 2005)
Traditionally, promising pharmaceuticals have been discovered by trial and error - or even by accident. They would then be tested for potency and side effects before, as often as not, being abandoned.

Predicting New Medicines (June 2004)
Rensselaer researchers in computer science, chemistry, and mathematics have collaborated to create a software program capable of quickly identifying molecules that show promise for future medicines.
