After
receiving his B.S. in Mechanical Engineering in 1972 from the
University of Missouri-Columbia, Michael Jensen spent two years
in industry. He returned to graduate school at Iowa State University
and was awarded his M.S. degree in 1976 and Ph.D. in 1980, both
in Mechanical Engineering. He then joined the faculty at the
University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee where he taught and researched
for seven years. In January, 1987 Michael Jensen became a member
of the Rensselaer faculty.
Research Interests
and Activities
Major Interests: heat transfer, fluid mechanics, heat exchangers, boiling two-phase flow, enhanced heat transfer.
My research interests have been directed toward convective single- and two-phase heat transfer and the associated fluid flow with the emphasis on these processes in heat exchangers. This research has been experimentally based, but numerical analysis using sophisticated computational fluid dynamics codes that can handle many general situations has been and is being used to complement the experimental work and to suggest additional avenues for investigation.
The two areas of research on which I have focused in the past several years are boiling heat transfer and two-phase crossflow in multi-tube bundles and single-phase enhanced heat transfer in tubes. In the former project we have been investigating the effects of bundle geometry on the various two-phase flow and boiling heat transfer processes. Coupled with this is the study of enhanced boiling surfaces and their performance in tube bundles. In the later investigations, we are studying laminar and turbulent single-phase flows in enhanced tubes, particularly internally-finned tubes, and the effects of fin geometry and variable fluid properties on the heat transfer and pressure drop characteristics.
