Dr. Gary A. Gabriele spent 4 years as a Captain in the U.S. Army Institute for Research in Management Information and Computer Science working in the area of software engineering. While in the Army, he completed his Ph.D. at Purdue in the area of design optimization. Following the Army, Dr. Gabriele worked for the Lockheed-Georgia company as an Associate Scientist in the Systems Design Department. His areas of responsibility were the development of optimization tools, and conceptual design tools for the design of large military transports. He came to Rensselaer in 1984 and has taught courses in design and design optimization. He was an associate editor for the ASME Transactions Journal of Mechanical Design, has been Conference Chairman of the ASME Design Automation conference and the ASME Computers in Engineering Conference, and is Chairman of the ComputersinEngineering Division of ASME.
Research Interests and Activities:
Major Interest: Design, Design Optimization, Design for Manufacture
Current research interests fall within two areas of engineering design, multidisciplinary design optimization of electronic packages and design of integral fasteners. Multidisciplinary Design Optimization (MDO) is a new approach to managing tradeoffs in complex design situations where conflicting design objectives drive the design in opposing directions. MDO tools provide quantitative characterization of the natural coupling that exists among contributing disciplines. Electronic package design involves many engineering disciplines and is an excellent example of a highly complex, multi-disciplinary design problem with complex interactions between the different elements of the design. This inevitably leads to tradeoffs and compromises for disciplines that need to optimize performance and producibility. This research will result in an approach for achieving design improvements by quantifying the interactions between the different disciplines involved in the design of an electronic package and incorporating them into an optimization procedure.
Integral or snap fasteners are features that provide attachment between parts through their deflection and elastic recovery. Snap joints typically use the deflection of a protrusion on one part to interlock into an undercut on the mating part. A key advantage of integral fasteners is that they are incorporated into existing parts thereby eliminating the need for separate fasteners. Because of this they have taken on a greater importance in modern product development when meeting design for assembly and manufacture goals. Currently the use of integral fasteners is considered a risk by many designers. To use integral fasteners in a design the designer must engineer each fastener which is not the case when using screws. The correction of a poor snap design usually requires costly, time consuming mold rework which can adversely affect a product's time to market. The specific goals of the research program are to develop an analytical approach for determining the optimal attachment strategy between two parts which will employ integral fastening, and to develop experimental and analytical methods for assessing the performance of an integral fastener.
