Dr. Crespo da Silva received two undergraduate engineering degrees from the "Escola Nacional de Engenharia" of the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, in 1963. After a technical tour of Europe that lasted two and half months in 1964, with a small group that consisted of two of his classmates and an Engineering Professor from his school, he worked in the Brazilian electronic industry and taught a course at his former engineering school. He went to Stanford University in September 1965, from which he received his M. Sc. (September 1966) and his Ph. D. (April 1969). His doctoral work was on satellite attitude dynamics, and he continued that work as a National Research Council (NRC) Post-doctoral research associate at NASA Ames Research Center in California. In 1971 he joined the faculty of the Aerospace Engineering & Engineering Mechanics Department at the University of Cincinnati, in Ohio, as an Assistant Professor, and was promoted to Associate Professor with Tenure in 1976, and to Professor in 1981. He was a Visiting Research Scientist in the Aeromechanics Laboratory at NASA Ames Research Center on a sabbatical leave in 1983. During that sabbatical he worked on nonlinear dynamics problems associated with helicopter rotor blades, which was a continuation of his research work that was funded by NASA and by the Aeromechanics Laboratory of the U. S. Army. He joined Rensselaer in 1986, attracted by the Rotorcraft Technology Center that was funded at Rensselaer by the U. S. Army Research Office. He founded the Symbolic Computation Laboratory at Rensselaer. Some of his work has been funded by NSF, U.S. Army Research Office, and the U.S. Air Force. He is a member of the American Academy of Mechanics, senior member of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, and a Fellow of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers. He has been vice-chairman of the First Pan American Congress of Applied Mechanics (PACAM I), chairman of PACAM III, and a contributor to other PACAMs.
