Getting Started
  1. Analyze your purpose and your audience. Do not omit this step. All other decisions you make depend on a close consideration of this purpose and audience.
  2. Generate ideas. Once you have a strong sense of what you want to accomplish and of those who are in a position to further your purpose, you need to decide what it is you want to say. Several strategies are provided which serve this process of invention.
  3. Choose an organizational strategy. Once you have identified the kinds of information you need to include in your communication, you need to decide how best to present it to your audience.
  4. Chunk and sequence your material. You have synthesized a great amount of information, and to prevent your audience from being overwhelmed, you need to divide and categorize the material.
