Writing Mechanics:
grammar &
usage

While many people seem to think the rules of "correct grammar" (that is, the conventions of edited standard English) are clear and fixed, they are not. A language that is used for day-to-day business is constantly evolving, and standards of usage consequently change.
Because language is constantly changing, books on grammar, usage, and style are not always consistent with each other. Noting the inconsistencies causes some students to throw up their hands in frustration and decide that "anything goes." The wiser course is to accept that standards may vary from one situation to another, and you need to become familiar with what is expected in the communication situations you face.

The following External Links offer helpful general advice, but you should also seek out the style guide for your particular field.
