The preliminary application for a professional position generally consists of two documents: a cover letter and a resume. While the resume addresses your qualifications for a position, the cover letter addresses your qualifications to work for a specific company/organization.

A cover letter is usually one page long. The letter should:

  • indicate your interest in a particular company or position
  • summarize the most important aspects of your education and experience
  • give an indication of what you aim to happen next: an interview, a follow-up call, . . .
  • let the employer know where and when you can be contacted

To construct an effective cover letter, you need to consider carefully the links above.
