Writing to the World-Wide Web

Participation

Participation is both expected and required; however, I realize that "participation" is a very individual thing. You should come to class prepared to discuss the assignments, both in small groups and with the whole class; you should also take part in the ongoing electronic discussion. The class e-list (webclass@rpi.edu) is your "journal space" for the semester.

There will be required journal assignments posted to the list (and copied to the syllaweb) after each class. All journal assignments for each week must be completed by Friday of that week. (That is, any journal assignments posted after a Tuesday or Thursday class can and should be done in the next day or two.) You will never be graded for grammar, spelling or usage in these posts; what matters is content. If you occasionally prefer to send your posts/entries to me directly rather than to the list, that is accceptable.

You will be encouraged to post above and beyond the required/assigned entries -- make this list a true discussion space. Ask each other questions, critique each other's work, look for and give feedback. All of your posts will be saved both to a class archive and to an individual archive for the purpose of giving a participation grade at the end of the semester.

Late Policy: You will be penalized 5 points per day (up to 25 points) for any late or missing journal entries. That is, if you receive an assignment on Thursday and don't turn it in until Monday, it is three days late, and you will be docked 15 points. Even if you are docked the maximum 25, you are expected to have completed all writing assignments by semester's end. Extra participation in the list discussion cannot "make up" for missing work, but it can help you overall.
