Grading Scale

This class is graded on a basic 1000 point scale. The points will be distributed in this way:

50% of your grade will be based on attendance and participation; that is, you can earn up to 500 points in this category. See Class policies for a complete explanation of how absences, lates and participation are "counted." Please note that participation means both  in the face-to-face classroom and on the class discussion list. Your "journal" (the class e-list) is part of this portion of your grade, and is the place where you can help (and hurt) yourself the most.

20% of your grade will be based on four in-class quizzes, already listed on the schedule. Consider yourself warned! Each one will be worth 50 points. Do not plan to have the opportunity to take a "makeup" quiz.

30% of your grade will be based on your small group's participation in and contribution to the making of the final class publication, which we will engage in the final ten weeks of the semester. You will be expected to keep a log of your personal contributions to the effort and to assess and critique your colleague's contributions. These will not be "group" grades; it is entirely possible for each member of a small group to earn a different grade on the project. This is a matter of acccountability and organization; you will be given an opportunity to "argue" for this portion of your grade, in writing, near the end of the semester.

There will be a final exam in this class. However, it is optional. This exam is intended for individuals who want an opportunity to help their grade in the class. Taking the exam can in no way harm your grade!

Scale:
A: 900+ points
B: 820-899 points
C: 740-819 points
D: 660-739 points
F: 659 or fewer points

Please note that the only circumstance in which I will consider giving an incomplete in this class is in the case of a documented health problem or family crisis.
