Writing to the World-Wide Web

Journal Assignments: Week #1

Replies should be posted to webclass@rpi.edu, the class' electronic discussion list.

Journal assignment #1:

A.) Describe your reasons for taking this class. How much experience do you have with the World-Wide Web? How often do you use the Web? Have you "written to the web" previously? (This includes construction of a homepage.) Why do you think a class like this is (or should/shouldn't be) offered?

B.) Describe yourself as a writer. When do you write? What kinds of writing do you do? Do you enjoy writing? Now, describe yourself as a reader.  What do you read? How often? Do you enjoy reading? How are these writing/reading questions related?

C.) Practical assignment: Read the entire syllaweb carefully. What questions do you have about the class? Policies, grading, whatever? What terminology do you not (yet) understand? Where does the syllaweb need to be more clear?

Due: Friday, January 19, except  for (C) which should be completed before class on Thursday, January 18.

Journal assignment #2:

Critique Mr. Collins' presentation; what was good about it, what was less strong? Did the examples he used prove the points he was trying to make? In your opinion, how important are Usability, Control and Relevance, in relation to each other?

For Monday (post by Monday evening before midnight):
Pick one of the two websites (Kaplan or Lunsford et al) and discuss it in terms of Collins' presentation. Carefully define how you are using the terms and give examples.

Extra: Refine and post your notes on the Collins presentation to webclass. I would be interested in seeing the different kinds of key points you took from the presentation and how you present them to yourself!

Also optional: comment on what questions you have about the LeMay book to the class list. If you have questions, very likely other people have the same ones; if we handles these questions on the list, it will make the quiz Monday that much easier!
