Why Have a
"Rhetorical Invention Homepage"?

Commentary by Mick Doherty

Let's get theoretical!
Nahh ... show me what's here.
Hey ... what time is it, anyway?

Disclaimer: Of course, what you'll read here is not the  reason to have a Rhetorical Invention Homepage. This is a reflection of why I think this site should exist. Actually, everyone I've talked to about this site seems to think it's a good idea, for a variety of their own reasons (some of which I think are terrible! ) ...

But, as you will read, this is a forum for exchanging ideas, providing productive dissensus as well as a step toward possible consensus. You will find mailto: links throughout this website soliciting commentary about the "Why?" question ... please do join the conversation.

Finally, I realize that the table/graphic above is somewhat ... traditional.  I am neither an Aristotelian theorist, nor particularly knoweldgeable about Edisonian invention. But when I asked my students in Writing to the World-Wide Web class to name the people they most closely associated with "rhetoric" and with "invention," these were nearly unanimous choices. Our ideas about rhetoric, invention, and rhetorical invention are informed by these kinds of associations; they are starting points.  Very much like this node purports to be in the conversation regarding the "Why?" question ... a starting point.
