This file answers three main questions: (1) What is MMLAW? (2) @sFHow do I take part? (3) Background information: Why is MMLAW needed? `t `w1. WHAT IS MMLAW? `x n yVMMLAW (which stands for Multimedia Law) is an interactive educational project for the yYRensselaer community. MMLAW aims to assist the campus in exploring intellectual property .yw[law and its implications for those who design, produce, and use multimedia. MMLAW provides CyX(1) an online forum in which people can discuss legal and practical matters involved in jXyVmultimedia computing, and (2) online reference files on intellectual property law and m@y multimedia. n`MM UMMLAW is organized by Patricia Search (518-276-6470; searcp@rpi.edu) and Karen Burke \LeFevre (518-276-8120; lefevk@rpi.edu), associate professors in the Department of Language, (sWLiterature, and Communication. Legal assistance is provided by Nicholas Mesiti '85, an `t\intellectual property lawattorney in the Albany law firm Heslin & Rothenberg (518-452-5600; fo@ismesitn@rpi.edu). c`r ZAssistance in spring '95 is provided by graduate student Lisa Schmeiser and undergraduate *wWJulianna Gardner (both of the Department of Language, Literature, and Communication). des?yaFunding for this pilot project is provided in part by the International Center for Multimedia in T@muEducation at Rensselaer. i`il o~`pe>PLEASE NOTE: We hope that MMLAW will provide some educational d In h 18HH K HH ef uci]assistance in navigating the complex world of intellectual property and multimedia. For instance, a Working Group on Intellectual Property Rights has been established ies_under the U.S. Department of Commerce to analyze the intellectual property implications of the ]National Information Infrastructure (NII). In the summer of 1994, the Working Group, chaired .[by Assistant Secretary of Commerce Bruce A. Lehman, published a preliminary "green paper," ed CZIntellectual Property and the National Information Infrastructure, which analyzes current XpuWintellectual property law and recommends some changes relating to new technologies and m@(electronic transmission of information. ng`ti , f \One of the green paper's recommendations is that instruction be provided about intellectual f @fproperty law: "Effective education of the public about intellectual property rights is crucial to the " y`successful development of the NII" (pp. 117-118). Education of current students is urged, as is es@"Rprofessional development education for teachers and educational administrators. `% &onaWe hope that projects such as this online discussion will take a step toward achieving that goal &ta^of providing further education. Ideally, this will not only make all of us at Rensselaer more *&tu\aware of the law and of contemplated changes in law, but will also encourage us as informed ?& p^citizens to take part in shaping law in the future, since intellectual property law will have T@&mi1significant effects on technological advances. i`/On f d ioLeftd idRighttntd Referencererd cad ntd d d op1( eHor aan dna d ra sh % Body. of oH f hca nll t ll thma aus Bulleted\t. f CellBody. f t CellHeadingl. f Re eFootnote. fT Heading1Body. fT aHeading2Body.
