| SciFinder Scholar (access to Chemical Abstracts) |
Wednesday, January 21 |
10:00 - 11:00 am |
Fischbach Room |
SciFinder Scholar 2004 has enhanced content and enhanced searching
capabilities over the previous version. Some of the enhancements to
content include: over 1 million experimental property values, over
400 million calculated property values, 35 million protein and nucleic
acid sequences, more reactions, dating now from 1907 - present, more
references in the CAPlus database dating from 1907 - present, lexicon
synonyms added to Explore Research Topic, citations now numbering
over 90 million, and increased patent coverage worldwide.
This presentation will include the following:
- Browse Tables of Contents
- Explore by Research Topic: In addition to reviewing the standard
commands we will discuss new options for added searching precision.
- Explore by Chemical Substance: We will draw chemical substances
including stereochemistry. We will look at techniques for limiting
retrieved chemical substances by substance class, by reference availability,
by substance characteristics, and by substance properties.
- Explore by Chemical Reaction: We will look at the new linking
options for reaction participants. We will look at ways to access
related reactions. We will see the new printing options for reaction
searches. We will also take a look at ways to target and focus reaction
searching and new techniques for reaction grouping, and analysis.

information such as an overview article on a chemical substance, or
how to purchase a chemical from a commercial supplier, or data such
as a pKa, an IR spectrum, or a boiling point, come to our RESOURCES
IN CHEMISTRY seminar to be held on Wednesday February 18th at 10 am
in the Fischbach Room of the Folsom Library.
Some of the resources we will discuss are: DIPPR, ChemFinder, SciFinder,
the NIST Chemistry WebBook, Material Safety Data Sheets, NIOSH, the

| Introduction to Basic Patent Searching |
Wednesday, March 31 |
10:00 - 11:00 am |
Fischbach Room |
Since patents are written in their own special language, keyword
searching can be unreliable at best. So how do you find patents? This
workshop will focus on the United States Patent Classification System,
and how it can be used for a more complete patent search based on
subject matter.

Fischbach Room |
In addition to hands on experience searching the USPTO's database
of Federally registered (®) trademarks, this workshop will also
answer the questions: Why would you want to register a trademark with
the USPTO? And why is it important to search the TESS database for
your product name/logo even if you don't register?
Registrations and/or Questions to : Donna Hopkins,
Engineering Librarian at hopkind@rpi.edu or 276-8314.
| Using Patents to Plot Business Trends |
Wednesday, April 14 |
10:00 - 11:00 am |
Fischbach Room |
The free patent databases can be used for more than just "has
my invention been patented?" The US Patent Classification (USPC)
system can be used to follow the ebb and flow of specific technologies,
even down to the type of device. Alternatively, data on the ebb and
flow of a particular company's (or group of companies) interest in
that technology can also be gathered. Find out how to use CASSIS (a
USPTO database available at Folsom Library) in conjunction with an
Excel spreadsheet to graph these trends. Important: Anyone
not familiar with the USPC should attend the "Introduction to
Basic Patent Searching" workshop on March 31. It will NOT be
covered in this workshop.
Registrations and/or Questions to : Donna Hopkins,
Engineering Librarian at hopkind@rpi.edu or 276-8314.
