Technical Information

All five volumes were digitally converted by OCLC Preservation Resources in 2003. Over 1700 pages were scanned from paper originals. Text was captured at 1-bit, 300 dpi resolution to produce ITU Group IV compressed tiff files. Illustrations were captured at 8-bit, 300 dpi to create uncompressed tiffs. From the tiffs, pdf files with hidden text were created, and pdf bookmarks were manually added from the volumes' tables of contents, indexes, and lists of illustrations. Due to their large file sizes, each volume was divided into two or more sections to improve download time when delivered via the internet.
