Rensselaer Lally School Center for Financial Studies Hosts “Quant” Career Panel Discussion with Rensselaer Alumni

  NYC

More than 54 Rensselaer business, engineering, and science students attended the “Quant” Career Panel Discussion at the Rensselaer Lally School Center for Financial Studies (CFS).

On September 19, a very successful program with more than 54 Rensselaer business, engineering, and science students was held at the Center for Financial Studies (CFS) in the Lally School. The event featured a Rensselaer alumni panel discussion, “Quant: What Does the Word Really Mean and Why Should I Consider a Quant Career?”

The interactive panel event featured two distinguished Rensselaer alumni who discussed:

  • The many meanings of the word “quant.”
  • How career paths have evolved in both financial engineering and risk management.
  • How a career in quantitative analysis can be an exciting and rewarding choice.
  • How the definition of “quant” has not only changed, but has stayed the same in some very important ways.
  • The overall impact of quantitative analysis on the field of finance.

    John L. Teall, Jackson Tai ’72 professor in practice at the Lally School, served as moderator for the Rensselaer alumni panel.  Pictured (from left to right) is Dr. Tom Hancock ’85 and Pankaj Patel ’90, who shared information on careers in quantitative finance.

The Rensselaer alumni executives included:

  • Dr. Tom Hancock ’85 (co-head of GMO’s Quantitative Equity Team and lead manager for their International Quantitative Portfolios);
  • Pankaj Patel ’90 (the global head of Quantitative Analysis at Credit Suisse).

The distinguished alumni panel answered questions from the students and offered lessons, insights, and experiences from their careers. Many of the Rensselaer business students who attended included those enrolled in the Lally School Financial Engineering and Risk Analytics (FERA) program.

These alumni are highly accomplished quantitative finance professionals and great representatives of the supportive alumni/ae network at Rensselaer.

Throughout the academic year, CFS invites industry executives to speak to various Lally School constituencies about the fields of corporate finance, financial intermediation, capital markets, risk analytics, and financial engineering.
