Rensselaer Team Heads to Walmart Better Living Business Plan CompetitionWalmart BPC

The Severino Center congratulates team DripDrop who will represent RPI at the 2012 Walmart Better Living Business Plan Regional Competition. DripDrop is an in-water bacteria detection system, geared toward water treatment and water reuse plants. Team members Nathan Pankowsky '13 (Mechanical Engineering) and James Davis '12 (Mechanical Engineering) will travel to the MIT campus on February 24th to compete against teams with ideas for a sustainable product or business solution from Baruch College - The City University of New York, Boston College, Boston University, Clark University, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, University of Massachusetts at Amherst, and Yale University.

The Walmart Better Living Business Plan Challenge is designed to recognize and award grants for outstanding student entrepreneurship in the area of environmental sustainability. Undergraduate and Graduate students were invited to submit plans for environmental business projects. Participants must present a sustainable, profitable business plan for a new product or business process with a measurable positive environmental benefit. This could include preserving clean air, water, and soil; reducing waste; improving energy efficiency or developing renewable energy ideas; and promoting healthy living for people and communities. Plans and presentations must quantify their ability to provide benefits in one or more of the above areas.

The Severino Center fielded submissions from Rensselaer students interested in entering the competition and selected Davis and Pankowsky to represent Rensselaer in the regional competition. Accompanying the DripDrop team to this year's competition will be Entrepreneur in Residence, Remy Arteaga '06. If they advance to the next round, team DripDrop will compete in the semi-finals and finals at the Walmart Home Offices in Bentonville, Arkansas in April for a grand prize of $20,000.
