Professor McDermott has taught courses in the undergraduate, graduate, and executive programs at RPI as well as in business schools in Asia and Europe and has won numerous awards for his teaching. He is also a Visiting Associate Professor at Albany Medical College, in recognition and support of his ongoing research into hospital operations at AMC.

Research and Publications
Professor McDermott’s worked as an electrical engineer prior to returning to academia. His work experience includes Westinghouse Electric Company, as well as Fairchild Space Company, where he was an on-site contractor at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center.
Professor McDermott’s research focuses on: 1) healthcare operations management; 2) new product development; and, 3) operations strategy. He is author of over one hundred research papers and conference presentations. His research articles have been published in outlets such as Journal of Operations Management, Decision Sciences, Journal of Product Innovation Management, IEEE Transactions on Engineering Management, International Journal of Operations and Production Management, International Journal of Production Research and the Journal of High Technology Management Research. In addition to these research articles and conference presentations, he is an author of several book chapters, and a co-author of the book Radical Innovation: How Mature Companies Can Outsmart Upstarts (Harvard Business School Press).
Professor McDermott serves as an Associate Editor for the Journal of Operations Management and also sits on the Editorial Review Board of the International Journal of Services and Operations Management. He recently completed his 3-year term on the Editorial Review Board of Decision Sciences. In addition to being a regular reviewer for many leading journals in the field, he has also been guest editor for special issues in both Journal of Operations Management and the International Journal of Production Economics. He recently was invited to serve as track chair for Healthcare Operations at the 2011 Decision Sciences National Conference, which was attended by more than 1400 academics and practitioners. He is frequently invited to present his research on Lean hospital operations to both academic and practitioner audiences.
