Center for Financial Studies (CFS)
The Center for Financial Studies (CFS) of the Lally School of Management strives to foster highest-quality research and learning in the fields of financial engineering, risk management, corporate finance, financial intermediation, and capital markets.
The CFS seeks to have a global impact, in support of the mission of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute while enhancing the worldwide visibility of the Lally School of Management as a premier business school.
The CFS has three distinct but related objectives:
To encourage, support and share quality research in the essential areas of finance with a particular focus on financial engineering, risk management and capital markets. To support this mission, the CFS sponsors conferences and seminars to encourage insightful discussions and collaboration, drawing on the expertise and interests of academic and industry economists and practitioners from around the world. The CFS supports faculty and student research by disseminating research through working paper series, organizing research workshops and by providing research resources to our faculty and students.
To reach out to and interact with industry and professional associations, providing workshops, seminars and short training programs for executives on current financial topics, challenges and concerns.
To support scholarship, outreach and learning activities of the most important constituencies of the Lally School -- students at doctoral, masters and undergraduate levels. The CFS supports student research at all levels, collaborates with and provides resources to Lally student organizations and assists students with their career development efforts.
Through its activities the Center seeks to elevate several key aspects of the Lally School, particularly within the finance area:
Support of faculty development through conferences, seminars and workshops, and support of faculty research and assist in securing faculty research grants and other research funding.
Creation of a trading room, to allow students access to data, software and literature. The CFS also serves as a stable repository for finance area data, software, and other research-related facilities at the Lally School.
Interaction with industry and professional associations through training programs and workshops, such as the annual IIT-Kanpur/Rensselaer Quantitative Finance workshop hosted by the Lally School. The Center also invites finance executives to speak to our various Lally School constituencies and support collaborative research activities with industry practitioners.
Enhancement of the educational and professional experiences of Lally finance students by making the Center's research facilities available to students wherever possible; interfacing with the Lally School Director of MBA/M.S Career Resources and the Rensselaer Center for Career and Professional Development to augment placement, internship, mentorship and networking opportunities for students; and collaborating with and providing resources to Lally student organizations, such as the Buttonwood Club and Student Managed Fund (SMF).
Engagement in professional relationships with academic and practitioner-oriented societies to support its other activities. The CFS seeks to nurture ongoing Lally relationships with the International Association of Financial Engineers (IAFE) and the Global Association of Risk Professionals (GARP) plans to initiate additional affiliations and memberships. Such affiliations might include CFA Institute, PRMIA, RMA, CAIA, The Q Group, and the Society of Quantitative Analysts. Such relationships have been and will continue to be essential to the scholarship, networking, and student career placement efforts of the Lally School.
Establishing and maintaining a connection to other Rensselaer faculty, particularly those working with finance and QFRA students, accounting faculty and faculty outside of Lally who have been offered joint Lally appointments. The Center seeks to strengthen these instructional ties as well as support research collaboration. Such faculty are invited to present research and pedagogy in Lally seminars, which serves to strengthen Lally relationships within the greater Rensselaer community.
