As the business school at Rensselaer, the Lally School is uniquely positioned to educate leaders for the global, innovation- and technology-driven marketplace of the 21st century. Our students acquire the skills to formulate effective strategies for decision-making in tomorrow's complex and dynamic business climate.
Our mission is clearly an ambitious one. Students who choose the Lally School do so because they are drawn to our innovative approach, working on the frontiers of business, entrepreneurship, and technology. In fact, the content and structure of our curriculum are designed to educate individuals who are agile and creative problem-solvers prepared to tackle 21st century business challenges.
Thomas Begley, Ph.D.
About the Dean
Dr. Thomas Begley is currently the Dean of the Lally School of Management and Technology at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. He previously served as the first executive dean of the University College Dublin Business School, the leading business school in Ireland, for more than five years, having joined the school as the Governor Hugh L. Carey Chair in Organizational Behavior in 2004. As dean of the UCD Business School, he increased research productivity of faculty, developed an executive education program, built partnerships with companies, raised external funding, and strengthened the international focus of the school.
In addition, he managed the “triple crown” of accreditations at the school: the UK-based AMBA (Association of MBAs); EQUIS, the European-based accrediting body; and U.S.-based AACSB International. For AACSB activity, Begley has served as a business school mentor, chaired peer review teams, and currently serves on its Maintenance of Accreditation Committee. He also advanced UCD’s position in the Financial Times rankings of the Global Top 100 MBA programs and moved the ranking from 53rd to 31st in The Economist Global Top 100.
Prior to joining UCD, Dr. Begley was a faculty member in the College of Business Administration at Northeastern University, where he served as chair of the Human Resources Management Department and director of the Bachelor of Science in International Business program.
Dean Begley holds Ph.D. and M.A. degrees in social psychology from Cornell University, and a B.A. degree from Seton Hall University. His primary teaching and consulting interests are in the areas of organizational change, cross-cultural management, and team development. His consulting clients have included Fortune 500 companies, governments, and nonprofit organizations in several countries.
Dean Begley has held visiting appointments at Nanyang Technological University in Singapore; the Prasetiya Mulya Graduate School of Management in Jakarta, Indonesia; Reims Management School in France; and Boston University. He has published numerous articles in top academic journals on organizational change, cross-cultural management, and global issues in human resource management. One of his articles was reprinted in The History of Management Thought. He served as research director for “The International Entrepreneurship Project,” a 20-country investigation of factors contributing to entrepreneurial activity. His practitioner-oriented articles have appeared in leading outlets such as the Sloan Management Review, Organizational Dynamics, Business Horizons, Human Resource Planning, and Mergers and Acquisitions.
