Workshop on Solid Mechanics – March, 2004

Workshop Description:
Here we focus on a number of rapidly advancing inverse problems fields including medical imaging through elastography, inverse problems for multiscale stochastic models, methods for inverse problems in nanomechanics and multiscale mechanics.

Antoinette Maniatty

During the inaugural year for the newly established IPRPI center, we are organizing day-long workshops to discuss inverse problems in a number of disciplines. The first in this series was devoted to Geophysical Imaging and was held on January 30, 2004. The second of these is the one described here, devoted to parameter identification problems in solid mechanics, which will be held on March 24, 2004. In addition, there will be an IPRPI Center Opening Conference at Rensselaer, April 5-7, 2004.

The workshop will be held in the Shelnutt Gallery, Room 3606, in the Rensselaer Union located at the eastern edge of campus on 15th Street in Troy.

Driving directions and a campus map can be found at:

8:30-9:00 Continental Breakfast
9:00-9:15 Welcome and Introduction
9:15-10:45 Paul Barbone and Assad Oberai (Boston University)
Elastic Inverse Problem in Medical Imaging and Medical Image Registration:
Mathematical Formulation and Efficient Computational Solution.
10:45-11:00 Discussion and break
11:00-12:00 Roger Ghanem (Johns Hopkins University)
Inverse Analysis for Multiscale Stochastic Models
12:00-1:30 Discussion and Lunch
1:30-2:30 Kyung-Suk Kim (Brown University)
A class of inverse problems in scale-bridging nanomechanics of solids:
  The field projection methods
2:30-2:45 Discussion and break
2:45-3:45 Tarek Zohdi (University of California, Berkeley)
Nonstandard Inverse Problems in Micro-Macro Mechanics
3:45-4:00 Discussion and break
4:00-5:00 Roundtable discussion, short presentations, etc.

We will provide lunch at the Faculty/Staff dining room.
Snacks will be available during the roundtable discussion time.

There are a number of places to stay in the Troy/Albany/Schenectady area that are convenient to RPI.

We have reserved a block of rooms at a reasonable hotel close to campus:
Franklin Square Inn and Suites
One Fourth Street
Troy, NY 12180
Ph: 518-274-8800
Fax: 518-274-0427
email: fssuites@yahoo.com
When you request a room, you should mention: "RPI Workshop on Inverse Problems in Solid Mechanics." The rooms will be held until March 10.

No formal registration is needed, but in order to have an idea of how many we need to accommodate contact (mclauj3@rpi.edu) know if you plan to attend.

A/V Equipment:
The workshop will provide a computer projector and an overhead projector. If additional equipment is needed, please contact (mclauj3@rpi.edu).

The schedule is given above.

There will be four formal presentations to serve as a focus for discussion. We are hoping to maintain an emphasis on discussion and participation, and encourage all participants to bring overhead/laptop presentations along with them. After the formal presentations, there will be an opportunity for discussion.
