The Carrot Seed

March 6, 1998

Dear Garden Kids,

I'm sending you some carrot seeds. When I was a Reading Teacher in New York City, I loved to read "The Carrot Seed" to my frist graders. Do you know the story?

It's about a little boy who plants a carrot seed. Every day he waters the soil and pulls out the weeds. Every day his mother, his father and his brother tell him it won't come up. But the little boy keeps sprinkling water on the seeds and pulling out the weeds. Everyone smiles at his efforts but continue to say it won't come up. And then one day, guess what happens? Yup! A beautiful carrot pops out of the ground. How happy the little boy is!

I always loved this simple story. It's a great feeling to plant something and then watch it sprout. But the story says something greater. If you believe in something and want it badly enough and work hard enough, you can make it happen.

Good luck with the carrot seeds.

Love,
Ellen Feldman
