How My Journey Starts

If I was back in the times of slavery
and my mother was sold
I would have been very angry and very sad.
I think I would have wanted to kill someone
because I love my mother more than anything
in the world.

If someone was to offer me a way to freedom
I’m not sure I would take that offer
because I would be afraid of being beaten to death.
If my older sister and Harriet Tubman
were to come to New York and find a safe hide out,
I would sure come.

Today, as a young black girl,
I have to make my own decisions for my journey.
In eight years I want to be in college.
I need to pass all my grades and get better grades
and I have to make my decisions to do my homework.

There are some people out in the streets
who are doing crack and drinking
but I will be getting my education
and growing up to be

SOMEBODY
