Message from Mrs. Strong, Principal

Our school, one of four elementary schools in the Averill Park Central School District, serves the children and families of a small town and countryside, a community combining the rich traditions of a well established rural population and the positive influence of newcomers seeking an alternative to urban and suburban life. Our school children, 360 students, grades kindergarten through fifth, provide a focus and source of pride for the 4,000 residents of the area.

In 1950-51 the present building was constructed and housed seven classroom teachers and one hundred forty-nine students. In 1966 six more classrooms, a health room, and offices were added. By 1979 the enrollment was 300. For the years between 1980 and 1991 our enrollment averaged 310 students. Over the past four years we have increased to 360 students. We have sixteen classes. We expect to build a big 15-room addition, including a new gym, and renovate our existing space in time for opening day of school in September, 1997.

We enjoy a lovely setting, one block south of the village crossroads, expansive front and side yards, a beautifully executed playground in the back yard leading to a pond, nature trails, track, and Project Adventure areas, all adjacent to the town playing fields and gently sloping hills and woods. We cherish our traditions as well as the spirit and pride of the town. We strive to honor the trust the community has bestowed upon us to provide the best quality learning program possible for their children, our learners, and to maintain the excellence recognized in our national Blue Ribbon Honors.
