| Six weeks to better health ... |
| Introducing the MVP Health Plan Personal Health Improvement Program Your doctor is the person best suited to evaluate your health, but sometimes there are no clear-cut answers for why patients have physical symptoms such as headaches, fatigue, stomach problems or insomnia. A person's mood and anxiety or depression can also influence physical health. Other patients suffer from chronic conditions such as multiple sclerosis, fibromyalgia, or diabetes. MVP Health Plan is pleased to introduce a new service available to our members called the Personal Health Improvement Program (PHIP). It's designed to help patients cope with stress-induced physical symptoms, and the pain caused by chronic diseases. The PHIP is a series of six weekly two-hour classroom sessions conducted by health care professionals who understand the "mind-body connection" and how moods and behavior can affect your body and health. In each class, the facilitator conducts interactive lectures, discussions and small group exercises designed to help the patient to respond to everyday situations more effectively. As part of the program, the facilitator, provides participants with a workbook, home study questions and an audio tape that guides them through awareness exercise. The facilitator asks the participants to do the awareness exercise daily. The PHIP works best if the participant attends classes regularly and completes home reading and learning assignments. There is a $60 charge for the PHIP. To encourage participation, MVP will refund $30 of the enrollment fee to any member who attends all of the classes. "The PHIP is based on the mind-body theory that mood and physical health are closely correlated," said Jerry Salkowe, MVP senior medical director for quality improvement. "It helps patients reduce suffering and the symptoms of chronic illnesses by allowing them to become aware of how their bodily reactions are related to behavioral patterns, including coping styles, and by teaching them new behaviors that will relieve their pain or discomfort."
