Who may participate?

If you are a full time regular or fixed-term employee, or a part time regular or fixed-term employee scheduled to work at least 1,440 hours per year you are eligible to participate in the dental plan.

What type of coverage is available?

The dental insurance plan, administered by MetLife Dental, provides full coverage for the reasonable and customary cost of preventive services twice a year.

Other services are subject to an annual deductible of $35 per individual, $100 per family. Services, such as fillings, are paid at 80 percent of the reasonable and customary charge. Major services, such as bridges and crowns, are paid at 50 percent of the reasonable and customary charge. The maximum benefit per calendar year per individual is $1,500. There is a once-in-a-lifetime orthodontic benefit of 50 percent of covered dental charges up to a maximum benefit of $1,500 per person.

You may choose individual, two-person, or family coverage. Dependent children up to age 19 (or to age 25, if full-time students) are eligible for coverage.

When can I enroll?
  • You may enroll the first of the month following your date of employment.

  • You may enroll in or change medical plans during the annual Open Enrollment period; coverage becomes effective the following January 1.

  • You may add or remove dependents during the annual Open Enrollment period, coverage becomes effective the following January 1.

  • You may also add or remove dependents or cancel coverage within 30 days of a qualifying family status change to be effective on the date of your status change.

How much does it cost?

Rensselaer pays 75 percent of the cost of dental coverage for you and your dependents if you are considered a full-time employee by Rensselaer.

If you are scheduled to work at least 1,440 hours per year, but less than full-time, Rensselaer pays 50 percent of the cost.

Your share of the cost is deducted from each paycheck on a pretax basis. Rates are set and announced on an annual basis, and are effective each January 1.

How do I file a claim?

Generally, your dentist will submit the claim electronically to the claims administrator. Claim forms are available from MetLife, the claims administrator, or from Human Resources.
