Human Resources Mission:

To create a collaborative partnership with each division that will enable people to achieve excellence and job satisfaction in their work environment.

* About HR

Human Resources provides the strategic focus and develops Institutewide initiatives to assist each division in achieving its commitments to the Rensselaer Plan, according to the HR performance plan.

HR plays an active role in the hiring of faculty “constellations” in the areas of biotechnology and information technology.

HR participates in the review of hiring, tenure, and promotion standards for faculty and partners with all divisions in developing sound practices in the recruitment, selection, and promotion of staff.

Accomplishments during Fiscal Year 2003 include:

  • Employment
    Coordinated recruitment efforts to hire Vice Presidents, Deans, Administrative Directors and a Constellation.
  • Total Compensation Initiative
    Developed compensation philosophy, career ladders, and salary structures. Market equity adjustments have been implemented in the following Portfolios: Faculty, Student Life, Administration, and DotCIO.
  • HR Polytechnote
    Created and produced monthly HR Newsletter via hardcopy and the Web to keep all employees informed of current HR issues of interest and impact.
  • Brown Bag Lunch Series
    Initiated a series of lunch meetings with supervisors to discuss updates on HR initiatives, identify next steps in critical areas, and answer questions.
  • Comprehensive Benefits Statements
    Prepared individualized comprehensive benefits statements detailing all benefits each individual employee is eligible to participate in as well as the dollar value of those benefits.
  • Employee Handbook
    Developed for consistent awareness and distribution on Troy and Hartford campuses in 2003.
  • Human Resource Policies/Procedures
    A comprehensive human resource manual for fair and consistent administration of employment practices.
  • Professional Development Program
    Classroom and web-based (Traincaster) programs developed to increase staff competencies.
  • Redesign of Front Office
    A redesign of the front office area was completed to be more welcoming and
    attractive to our customers including a welcome board with names of office guests.
  • New Website Look
    A new look to our website was developed to be user-friendly and include helpful features such as HR forms to enable more flexibility and accessibility for our customers.
  • Compliance Audits
    Received “no notice of violations” in response to inspection audits by EPA, OSHA, and NY state DOL, DOH, and DEC.
  • Pension Administration
    Based on GUST requirements and EGTRRA provisions of the tax code, changes were made to our pension plans. Additional investment offerings were made through TIAA-CREF and Fidelity Investments.
  • In the News
    Rensselaer was ranked #6 by the Business Review as one of the area’s 50 best private sector employers.
  • Performance Management Tool
    Developed and implemented a standard institute-wide system for effective management of human capital. Featured as ‘best practice’ in Higher Education by College and University Professional Association (CUPA).
  • Compliance & Employment Law Seminar
    Developed and presented training to Cabinet, Deans, and Department Chairs about compliance with federal and state laws in high education administration.
