Fall
2004 Pedagogy Brownbag Schedule
In
AY2003-2004, the FYS Program launched a series of brownbag
lunches dedicated to the issue of undergraduate pedagogy.
Although the series is directed primarily towards
faculty
and teaching
assistants in the FYS program, it is open to
the entire H&SS
community. Our overall
intent is to create a community of instructors with a genuine
interest
in undergraduate
instruction at RPI. We believe that teaching is a craft
discipline; these brownbags are intended to introduce both
basic and
contemporary thinking about undergraduate pedagogic reform
to university instructors, most of which have had little
or no formal training in undergraduate education. Each
year, we intend to hold approximately five meetings, rotating
both through a set of "standard" topics of concern to all
instructors, as well as a number of more specialized topics
that reflect contemporary thinking and research on best
practices in undergraduate education. All sessions generally
uphold our vision of engaged learning, and close student-faculty
interaction.
All
sessions, except where noted, will be conducted by Julie
Gutmann, the pedagogic director of our program. If you
wish, you can always reach her at gutmaj@rpi.edu, or 276-8095.
