NSF FASTLANE

NSF is pleased to announce
the redesign of FastLane's Research Administration Module.

Rensselaer is able to submit proposals electronically to the National Science Foundation (NSF) by way of the NSF FastLane. The process for submitting a proposal to NSF electronically is provided at the bottom of this page. Future updates to this document will be available through this web site.

IMPORTANT NOTICE
In accordance with the National Science Foundation’s (NSF) vision of a fully integrated, electronic proposal award system that will provide a quick, secure, paperless record and transaction mechanism for all NSF awards, from program announcement to award closeout, the FastLane was initiated in 1994.   Effective October 1, 2000, NSF requires that all full proposals be submitted electronically via the FastLane.  In addition, the FastLane will be used to conduct reviews, process award actions and handle other interactions with the research and education communities.  In order for a Principal Investigator to access the FastLane, he/she must be a registered FastLane user and be assigned a password.   Any faculty member, who currently has an NSF grant or plans to submit proposals to NSF, should contact Research Administration and Finance ((RA&F)) to ensure that they are registered in the FastLane and have been assigned a password.

Also, all NSF grantees or proposers should familiarize themselves with the FastLane system by visiting the web site located at http://www.fastlane.nsf.gov/.   Anyone who would like to receive instruction in the use of the FastLane, should contact (RA&F) at 6282 to set up an appointment with one of the proposal reviewers.  In preparing your proposal for submission to NSF, please refer to the Grant Proposal Guide http://www.nsf.gov/pubs/2003/nsf032/gpg032.pdf to be sure that all sections of your proposal (project description, references, biographical sketches, etc.) conform to the required format.  The staff in (RA&F) is available to provide any assistance you may require and to answer any questions.

Research Administration and Finance ((RA&F)) will continue its policy of preparing the Cover Page, Budget, and Current and Pending Support.  All other forms required by NSF will be the responsibility of the Principal Investigator.

This process is new and more time consuming than a normal NSF submission, therefore, it is imperative that all information be provided to (RA&F) in a timely fashion.  To guarantee that (RA&F) has the necessary time to process and submit the proposal electronically, we require that the Proposal Information Sheet and a working budget be forwarded to us no later than ten (10) working days prior to the sponsor deadline.   If an electronic submission does not contain all of the information required by NSF, it will be rejected by the FastLane.  Therefore, all data, including the text, should be input into the FastLane at least one day prior to the deadline.  This will ensure that (RA&F) and the PI have sufficient time to correct any problems that occur.  It is important that these guidelines be followed so that no proposal deadlines are missed.

The responsibility for completion of forms on FastLane is as follows:

  Research Administration and Finance

  Principal Investigator

  Cover Page

  Facilities, Equipment and
  Other  Resources

  Budgets
