This project continues to be a work in progress for EcoLogic and all the folks involved with the Greening of Rensselaer Initiatives. This summer is the fourth year of efforts in the chemical-free garden. Crops include lettuce, tomatoes, cucumbers, basil, Italian parsley, zucchini, eggplant, broccoli and peas. Stop by and have a look at the garden if you're up near the Field House. It's on the corner of Georgian Terrace and Detroit Avenue.
A couple years ago we worked with the Rensselaer Administration to build a greenhouse on Sunset Terrace. The greenhouse is up and running, and campus plants were grown in it this spring. Last year, the Energy Conservation Program coordinated the addition of some passive solar features to that greenhouse. We added north wall insulation and buckets of water for thermal mass. This should reduce the need to burn gas to heat the greenhouse in the cooler months.
If you would like to get involved with these projects, please contact the Greening Coordinator at firstname.lastname@example.org. We are very interested in having students and faculty use the garden and greenhouse for acadamic projects, and we are also always looking for people who have a green thumb (or would like to develop one!) to help
