PARKING AT RENSSELAER

Last updated: November 12, 2001

SUGGESTIONS:

Every year there are many parking ticket appeals from students who just do not seem to know the rules or are confused by them. Here are some simple tips to avoid getting ticketed.

  • Only park in designated spaces.
  • Do not park somewhere just because you saw someone else park there. Just because they are not ticketed does not mean it is OK. They might just be lucky.
  • Flashers allow you to park in a fire lane for only 10 minutes. They only allow you to park in a fire lane. All campus roads are fire lanes.
  • As you drive into a campus parking lot, read the sign saying what permits are required to park there.

Do not ask friends, faculty members, or staff if parking is permitted somewhere. The only people who can answer your question is the Parking Office x6616. Ask them before you park somewhere if you are not sure if parking is allowed. You might ask Public Safety, they will try to answer your question, however they are very busy and might not have the time to explain everything. If the person you asked gives you the wrong information you will still have to pay the ticket if you receive one.

WHAT IF YOU GET A TICKET AND THINK YOU ARE RIGHT? - APPEAL!!!!

An appeal does not mean you will not have to pay the ticket. It simply means a member of the Student Motor Vehicle Court will review your case. There are appeal forms in the Parking Office and at Public Safety. Please use them. There is also an Appeals Guide, read this carefully. If English is not your native language you might want to have someone review your appeal before you submit it. There is nothing wrong with asking for help; the appeal is your one chance to overturn the ticket. If your appeal is incomplete or hard to read, it might be denied.

  • If you receive too many tickets, your car will be booted so you will be unable to drive it.
  • Outstanding tickets will put a HOLD on your account.
