On-Campus Summer Housing

IMPORTANT NOTICE:

If you are planning on:
-Living on campus this summer
-Storing items in Residence Life storage over the summer

The information below will be very helpful to you.

Planning Ahead

• Problems arise mostly because students do not plan ahead of time.
• Always check the Housing Calendar at the Residence Life website (http://j2ee.rpi.edu/reslife/update.do?artcenterkey=113&setappvar=currentCat(news ) )
• The Housing Calendar will help you with planning purposes
• Any questions ask Residence Life or find info on the website; do not make any assumptions

Storage

• Storage planning:

o On-campus storage:

? No plastic/trash bags. Only easy-to-stack boxes, suitcases and duffel bags. Mini fridge is allowed.
? Limited space, first come first serve basis (storage space is not guaranteed for everyone)
? No cost to students
? You cannot get into the storage facility during the summer

o Off-site storage:

? Must be arranged on your own
? More secure and bigger
? Can put in anything you want
? Pay monthly
? Can be accessed at anytime

• Storage information will be out at least 3 weeks before semester ends
• Be aware of how much stuff you’ll be needing for summer and only bring those into summer housing
• Stuff not used for the summer (i.e.: winter clothes) can be put away in storage.
• Plan the date to move stuff into storage. Don’t wait until last minute because on-campus storage gets full quickly.

Extensions, Summer Housing & Transitions

• Plan flight details ahead of time (both departure and arrival); as close as possible to the housing closing/opening date.
• Apply for extension requests as early as possible (extensions are only given for the time between dorm closing and graduation date)
• No extensions granted after graduation date
• Information on summer housing will be on the Residence Life website.
• Students who leave early during the summer should not leave their belonging behind in their summer housing.

o It is their responsibility to bring back their stuff or put it in storage.
o The space will need to be reused for other students

• Students who leave early will not have transition housing into their fall housing

o They will have to wait until the halls officially open.
o There is no early arrival policy

• It is difficult to assign students who want to stay together but leave during the summer at different times.
• Students who need housing for a couple of days/weeks for their flight will be assigned special temporary housing (short-term).

o These will different housing assignment from the summer housing.
o Cannot accommodate roommate request.
