Mike, hi. Here's the data on the lab, now annotated so as to help you in your document. In a bit, I'll send you the promised brief blurbs on Creative Agents and SuperMinds/SuperTeaching (though for a brief description of the latter you can visit http://www.rpi.edu/ppcs/MM/superteaching.html $6500 for hardware related to robotics/vehicles for SuperMinds/SuperTeaching project, to be used in Ron's and Selmer's classes. 2 robo-cars, etc. This hardware is crucial to M&M. We must pursue this strand, have toys to show and have students tinker with them. Ron can supply the full details, but I believe that in addition to the robo-cars we need a lego robot kit, two cameras, and receivers. The idea is that this equipment can be used to build a system allowing someone to be telepresent at some distant location. That someone could be a teacher, and that is indeed our idea. For a brief description of SuperTeaching, see http://www.rpi.edu/dept/ppcs/MM/superteaching.html The following three items are needed to create a web site for Minds&Machines. Of course the equipment can be used for web-related work on other aspects of PP&CS activities. 1 Digital Camera approx $2000 1 Scanner approx. $2000 1 Laser printer approx. $2000 Before I said: 2 UNIX boxes, say a Sun and an IBM. Standard RCS setup; co-located. $10,000? Now, I think we can shave down a bit here as follows. We can take the two IBM RS6000 machines in Carnegie, upgrade them for $1200, and move both of them into the lab. This will allow us to get away w/ buying *1* new workstation. I would suggest that it be a Sun or a Silicon Graphics machines. Let's say $6000. We need the UNIX boxes b/c the campus is still very much a UNIX place, and students can work on these machines (as will I). 1 High-end stationary Mac (still the best platform for AV work) $5000 This machine will be used to develop M&M as an on-line entity. It will probably not be on the local net, but it can be linked to RCS, and so files can be moved from it to the IBM machines. An intranet built around Windows NT and IBM (or IBM compatible) Machines. This relates to what Ron brought in from that magazine today. 3 high end IBM PCs; the Mac on the local net as well server from one of these machines $10,000 Laptops: 1 high end PC for Ron $4000 1 such machine for Selmer; and 1 high end Mac $4000; $6000 $3000 for software languages AV software ... security system -- a big problem. Good thing there is only one door. We might want to look at security EMAC has for their lab. ACS will no doubt have advice here. AC will be needed; not included in 60K estimate. ACS will doubtless have advice here. ACS would need to do networking; I don't know the cost of this. I understand that you and Ron are meeting w/ ACS. Machines to be located in "center" of 205, preserving blackboards around perimeter. Perhaps to be moved into IT MegaCenter. We will need help from Faye in securing the room. Computer Science converted a number of classrooms in the Sage Bldg, so we should have no problem taking over one smallish classroom.
