Warranty and Repairs

The laptop computer comes with a three-year manufacturer's warranty. The battery has a one-year warranty.

Warranty service is available on-campus through Rensselaer Computer Repair (RCR) located on the lower level of the Voorhees Computing Center. If you participate in the lease program, a limited number of "loaner" laptops may be available on a "first come, first serve" basis in the unlikely instance that your computer may need extensive repairs.

If you find that your laptop requires service while you are off-campus,
you can

  • Call IBM for assistance. Within the United States, call 1-800-772-2227; from outside the United States, see "International Warranty" information below. IBM will issue a certificate which will allow for warranty service at any worldwide "authorized" IBM dealer.
  • Ship your machine to Rensselaer Computer Repair for service.

Insurance

If you lease your laptop from Rensselaer, theft and damage insurance is included in the program. There is a $1000 deductable per incident. If you are going to file a claim under Rensselaer insurance, follow these instructions.

If you purchase your laptop computer, either from us or bring your own, you are responsible for providing your own insurance coverage. Check your homeowner's insurance for accidental damage and theft coverage.

International Warranty

Each Thinkpad comes with a three year limited mfg.'s warranty from IBM. This warranty is valid internationally, but, you must obtain an International Warranty Service Certificate (IWSC) from IBM directly. If you are planning a trip overseas you should obtain your IWSC before you leave. This certificate authorizes IBM Service Centers and Retailers worldwide to honor your warranty. The certificate may be obtained from IBM by calling the IBM Warranty Service Office at 1-800-497-7426 (United States) or 248-740-1215 outside of the United States.

IBM requests certain information when you register for your certificate: Machine type and Model Number, Serial Number, Purchase Date, will you be outside of the U.S.A. for 6 months or more?. They will process your application and send you a certificate.

If you are outside the U.S.A. and do not have a certificate, don't panic. As long as you have your original proof of purchase (invoice) any IBM retailer can assist you with obtaining a temporary certificate from theWarranty Service Office. Further information concerning how this program works and how to obtain your certificate may be obtained from the IBM IWSO at 1-800-497-7426.

While Rensselaer Computer Repair can assist you with warranty repairs while you are on campus, it is not our policy to ship machines outside of the U.S.A., we suggest that you work with the IBM reseller in the country you plan to be traveling in and the IWSO.

Getting Help

When you first pick up your laptop computer, we will help you get it set up and configured for use with the Rensselaer network. Help is available at the Help Desk in the VCC every day but Saturday, including weekends. At the beginning of the fall semester, help will be available in the dorms. You will also be given written documentation about using your laptop when you receive the machine, and there is extensive on-line help available.
