for
Your Laptop

The biggest cause of loss is negligence. Never leave an unattended laptop in plain view without securing it - be sure to use the security cable! Most laptops are stolen from unlocked (however briefly) residence hall rooms and campus buildings.

-If your laptop is damaged, start by going to Rensselaer Computer Repair on the lower level of the VCC. If your laptop needs a lengthy repair, they can arrange for a loaner machine, subject to availability.

-If your laptop has been stolen, contact Public Safety at 276-6656 immediately! Then go to Rensselaer Computer Repair on the lower level of the VCC. They can arrange for a loaner machine, subject to availability.

-Filing a claim under Rensselaer's insurance

  • Note that there is a $1000 deductible per occurrence.
  • Before any Rensselaer insurance claims are processed, it will be necessary to verify that there is no additional insurance in place, such as homeowner's insurance. Our insurance program will act as a secondary policy.
  • Contact Jeff Sullivan through Risk Management at Rensselaer, who will help you with the necessary paperwork. He can be reached by e-mail at sullij2@rpi.edu or by appointment from 9 - 11 AM on Tuesdays in the Troy Building. You will need to bring with you a completed Laptop Loss/Damage Notice (pdf file), a copy of the Public Safety Incident Report, if your laptop was stolen, and a printout of your laptop status from the Student Information System.
