Distribution
Return of 1999 Leased Laptop Computers

Laptop Distribution:

You can pick up your laptop at the Campus Computer Store on the main floor of the VCC during normal store hours (Monday - Friday, 10am - 12:30pm, 1:30pm - 4:30pm).

Important: You must bring a picture ID with you when you pick up your laptop. Having your Rensselaer Identification Number (RIN) will also make this procedure easier. When you configure your laptop for network connectivity, you will also need your RCS userID and password.

Return of Leased Laptops

Before you return your laptop (ThinkPad 600E):

1. Save your data. Remember you will have to reinstall software programs on your new laptop (copying a .exe file is not sufficient for the program to run).

  • Set up a password-protected share on the 600E laptop. Then, with both laptops on the network at the same time, you will easily be able to transfer files. For information about shares, see the section "Sharing Files Across RCS" in Computing @ Rensselaer. It can be found on pages 63-64 in the pdf file.
  • Use the EZ-Snapshot backup service to save the files from your old laptop and transfer them to your new one.

2. Remove any BIOS-related passwords you have created.

3. Locate all the parts. If any parts are missing, you will be billed a $25 handling fee in addition to a $25 charge for each missing part.

In addition to the machine itself, you must also return the following:

Battery
Floppy drive and cable
CD-ROM drive
AC adapter and power cord
PCMCIA Etherjet Card and dongle

You may keep the backpack and the ethernet cable.

The laptop must be returned in working order, with no physical damage. You will be charged for any repairs we find that are not covered under the mfg's warranty.

Returning your laptop: (update 9/25/01)

Laptops can be returned to Rensselaer Computer Repair on the lower level of the VCC Monday through Friday between noon and 4 PM. If you cannot come during those hours, you can call ext. 8178 to set up an appointment.

Please allow about 20 minutes for the return process including paperwork and the diagnostic testing.

If the laptop is not returned, your student account will be charged $450.
