Symantec AntiVirus Installation Overview
Symantec AntiVirus Corporate Edition 10.0.1 (for Windows)

Instructions

  1. Select the appropriate version of the Windows operating system below.
    Symantec AntiVirus Corporate Edition 10 (SAV 10) is only supported on the Windows 2000 and the Windows XP operating systems. Symantec AntiVirus Corporate Edition 9 (SAV 9) runs on Windows 98, Windows ME, and Windows NT. The appropriate version of Symantec AntiVirus Corporate Edition will be downloaded based on your operating system choice.
  2. Complete the Symantec AntiVirus License Agreement below.
  3. Submit the Symantec AntiVirus License Agreement.
  4. Electronically "sign" the license agreement by entering your RCS userID and password.
  5. You will be prompted to save the installation executable file (e.g., rpi-sav-winxp.exe) on your computer. Choose a folder and file name that are stored locally on your computer. Do not use a network folder.

    If you are using Microsoft Internet Explorer with Windows XP Service Pack 2 you may experience problems downloading the installation executable file. To fix this Internet Explorer problem, follow these steps:

    1. Select Tools-->Internet Options... from the Internet Explorer menu bar.
    2. In the Internet Options window, click on the Security tab.
    3. Click on Local intranet in the Select a Web content zone to specify its security settings. field. Click on the Sites... button.
    4. In the Local intranet window, click on the Advanced... button.
    5. In the second Local intranet window, enter https://www.cis.rpi.edu in the Add this Web site to the zone: field. Click on the Add button. Click on the OK button.
    6. In the first Local intranet window, click on the OK button.
    7. In the Internet Options window, click on the OK button.
    8. Later after successfully updating Symantec AnitVirus, follow similar steps to remove https://www.cis.rpi.edu from the local intranet zone.
    Another option to solve the download problem is to use a different browser (e.g. Mozilla, Netscape).

  6. Uninstall any existing antivirus software and reboot.
  7. Run the downloaded file (e.g., rpi-sav-winxp.exe) by double clicking on its icon.
  8. When the Rensselaer Symantec AntiVirus Installation window appears, read the information displayed. Click on OK to continue the installation. Click on Cancel to terminate the installation.
  9. When the WinZip Self-Extractor window appears, click on Setup to begin the installation. Click on Cancel to terminate the installation.
  10. After the files have been unzipped, the installation will begin. Please be patient and follow the installation screens.
  11. At the Client Server Options window, select Client Install.
  12. At the Network Setup Type window, select Unmanaged.
  13. At the Install Options window, select Auto-Protect and Run LiveUpdate.
  14. LiveUpdate will automatically run as part of the installation to update the virus definition files. Do NOT click on Finish in the InstallShield Wizard Completed window until LiveUpdate is complete.
  15. After clicking Finish in the LiveUpdate Options window, Updating Virus Protection Files windows will appear as the virus definition files are actually updated.
  16. When the Updating Virus Protection Files windows are gone, click on Finish in the InstallShield Wizard Completed window.

It is recommended that you schedule virus definition updates on a daily basis. Open the Symantec AntiVirus Client and select File-->Schedule Updates.... Click on the Schedule button to schedule virus definition updates.

Patches

A patch for Symantec AntiVirus Corporate Edition 10.0.1 enhances the handling for security risks. These enhancements are largely transparent to the user. Click here for the patch and installation instructions.

Versions of Symantec AntiVirus Corporate Edition prior to 10.0.1 automatically performs a virus scan whenever a user logs into the computer. The computer runs very slowly for several minutes until the virus scan is complete. To remove the login virus scan, click here to run or download the registry patch. The patch must be run for each account on the computer.

Select the Operating System

Select the appropriate MS Windows operating system from the drop down list.

Symantec AntiVirus License Agreement

I certify that I am a member of the Rensselaer community (student, faculty, or staff) and request use of a Symantec AntiVirus license for my computer. Access to Symantec AntiVirus is provided upon condition of my acknowledgement and agreement to the terms and conditions of use as cited below:

  1. Grant of License Use:
    Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute as licensee grants access and academic use to the User of a Symantec AntiVirus license. The license will be limited to academic or research activity. Any form of commercial activity is prohibited.

    User is not obtaining title to the Software or any copyrights. User is prohibited from selling, sublicensing, renting, leasing, conveying, modifying, translating, decompiling, or reverse engineering the software for any purpose.

    User may not give or distribute the Software to any other party or post to public boards. Such action is considered a violation of the license grant and Rensselaer Computer Use policy (www.rpi.edu/web/comec) with subsequent resulting penalties.

  2. Use of License:
    User acknowledges that use of software is limited to computers located on the Rensselaer Campus, Troy, N.Y. User agrees that upon leaving the Rensselaer community (no longer student, faculty, or staff) the software must be deleted from the User's computer.

  3. Number of Licensed Copies:
    User is granted a single copy of the license for a single computer. User must execute an Agreement for each additional license. Rensselaer Schools and Departments may use multiple copies under this Agreement.
